“… in the area of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, the National Pollutant Release Inventory 2005 data shows that 73% of PM10 comes from re-suspended road dust and construction sites.” - Deluca P. F., Corr D., Wallace J., Kanaroglou P. (2012)

“Simulations … resulted in potential reductions of total solids of about 3% and 5% for monthly mechanical-brush and vacuum-assist street cleaner operations, respectively, and 16 percent for the [TYMCO DST-6] street cleaner.”  -
Sorenson J. (2009-2011)

The results from this study suggest that the regenerative air will machine will remove approximately 5 (16/2.7) and 3 (16/5.2) times more total solids from urban and commercial streets with a monthly street cleaning program.

In 2006 and 2007 the City’s Public Works Department replaced its entire complement of street sweepers with a fleet of new TYMCO DST-6 regenerative air street sweepers, chosen because of its proven ability to control and remove PM10 and PM2.5 contained in road dust.”  Deluca P. F., Corr D., Wallace J., Kanaroglou P. (2012)

A reduction in PM10 readings pre and post workshop was in part contributed to the purchase of the Tymco DST-6 regenerative air street sweepers.
“The link between increased particle pollution and health issues has been well documented, prompting the introduction of strict exhaust emission standards. However, research has shown that non-exhaust emissions also contribute significantly to atmospheric particle concentrations,” Lawrence S., Sohki R., Ravindra K.,  Mao H., Prain H. D., Bull I. D. " Majority of particulate matter emissions is due to non exhaust sources such as brake wear, road surface wear, and particles launched into the air by passing vehicles"
Fine particulate matter of PM2.5 or less when inhaled goes directly into the blood stream through the lungs  carrying with it carcinogens such as phosphorus, nitrates and other hazardous VOCs.

Due to the crowned nature of roadways for drainage, on average more than 85% of material is found 2-3  feet from the gutter.

All sweeper technology harvests material from the gutter the same way. The gutter broom brings the  material out into the centre of the road, and the pick-up system engages 100% of the material. Any material  not removed is left in the path of vehicles to continually re-suspend this hazardous road dust.

The inability to remove all size material from the streets, especially fine particulate matter, can result in hundreds of tons of hazardous material to be left in the path of vehicles or washed through into our water.
